The tale of a card on Pinterest: Cutaway Technique
I have a funny story to tell about a simple card that went on to big things.
Back in 2010 I shared some cards on my blog from a team swap.
One of them was this card by the lovely Debbie Hand.
Over the years I noticed that a lot – and I mean A LOT – of visitors were coming to my blog to visit this card, mainly from Pinterest.
Many have emailed me about it. Most shared how much they liked the design. Some had CASEd it. Occasionally people asked how to make it. I even had an angry email (“why don’t you ladies give instructions!”).
I sent many emails explaining how I believe, just by looking at it, that the card was made. But in the past week alone I’ve received another 5 emails about it! So, I’m here today to provide as much info as I can about this card.
Debbie and I have had a big chuckle about it too.
HOW DO YOU MAKE IT?
1. Create a standard card base, with the fold on the left side.
2. Using your paper trimmer, cut out a section from the card front.
3. Punch a semi-circle from the card front with a circle punch.
4. Embellish card front and add a flower to the inside so it peeks through the punched semi-circle opening.
Yep, it really is that easy!
FAQ
– The original card was created using the now-retired stamp sets Bird on a Branch (for the speckled image and also the sentiment) and Cottage Garden for the flower.
I hope this helps. Have fun recreating this cool card!
Cheers,
I bet you have had a laugh!

Lovely design, thanks for sharing
Hi,
Love this concept. I am going to adopt it for my Christmas card this year with a few changes. I am going to punch the circle first, then spritz the front of the whole card. After the spritz dries, then I am going to cut off the section of the card front I don’t need. That way I will have “white space” to stamp my sentiment but the opening for the embellishment will have the matching spritz. Can’t wait to try it out!
Wow Karen. LOVE this idea!!! Would love to see the finished product. Thanks so much for sharing 🙂

Merci beaucoup ! Je vais faire cette carte pour Noël avec un flocon de neige à la place de la fleur. Bravo pour vos réalisations !
Count me in as another visitor from Pinterest that is currently CASEing this card. I wish I’d have read Karen’s suggestion before I splattered mine! LOL! Thank you so much for posting this! 🙂 And thank you so much to Deb for the wonderful idea! 🙂

I too had a good laugh!
I don’t understand why anyone would get angry with you.
Like you said, just a look at the card, it tells you exactly what you need to do, it couldn’t be any simpler.
Some people just don’t have it, I guess.
Great job on the ideas you give us all, keep them coming. ??????
I just saw this card on Pinterest thought it looked easy and straight forward in its design. Also liked Karen Moffat’s idea about another way to make it. Its a very design for all sorts of occasions, a must do. Thank you for the info.
The card is great for any occasion. I did make one from the picture. Thanks for sharing the card.
And all these years later we are still being complimented on how nice our cards look using this design. Thank you.
Love the card. Thanks for the instructions but I do believe I could have figured it out. LOL
Love the card. That’s a no brainer on how to make that card.
Hi, I didnt come from Pinterest, just happened upon your post. I liked the care so much I had to create it straight away!
This card design you might have shared 9 years ago, but it is still stunning. I’m not good at figuring cards out, but this one I figured before reading your instructions. Very simply explained instructions. Thank you!
This caught my eye right away and knew I could do it. It was very easy to do.
There are so many options to try. Thank you for showing this card.
