CTC 54: Stampin’ Up! Christmas Colours (& the whitewash technique)

Published by under cards | Nov 01 2015

It’s colour challenge time!

This week our Case-ing the Catty crew are inspired by a Stampin’ Up! Christmas colour theme that really pops: Mossy Meadow, Pool Party and Real Red.

Colour Challenge: Mossy Meadow, Pool Party, Real Red

I went straight to the Home for Christmas cardstock pack and the Home for Christmas designer series paper for this project, all conveniently in this colour palette.

I wanted to try something a little different, though, and remembered a technique from a past training event.

A bright patterned sheet had been sponged with a layer of white Craft Stampin’ Ink, which resulted in an interesting toned-down look. It looked almost white-washed.

Here are some before & after photos from the big screen:

Whitewash paper technique - to alter the look of bright patterned paper

I modified this technique by just lightly sponging the outer edges of a panel of the holly paper with the Craft Stampin’ ink.

Can’t find the white Craft Stampin’ ink in your catalogue? Check out page 163 of the annual catalogue. It is described as a:

Rich, permanent pigment Whisper White ink for embossing or creating an opaque look on dark cardstock.

It does take a while longer to dry, compared to our regular classic ink pads. Being a little impatient I waved my heat tool over it with a few seconds to set it quickly. Good time to replace those Jamberry nail wraps (yes those heat tools come in very handy and I’m sure I’ll be embossing more now that I’ve caught the Jamberry bug – hehehe).

I then sponged the edges in a little Mossy Meadow ink to bring back definition to the edges.

It reminds me of a filter you can apply to photos. It was fun to play with this technique and I’ll have to try it again another time.

So how are you going with your Christmas cards? Are you inspired to try this colour theme with your cards?

It’s now November, so you know what that means….. Christmas is NEXT MONTH!

Simone, your card and technique is divine. I have to say I’m really really inspired by your embossed flag – what a fabulous idea. I love it! I think I’d like to CASE both of these ideas very soon!

Thanks Julia. The Boughs & Berries embossing folder was a good match for that paper.

I have to agree with Julia, love the embossed flag, but i love all the little details on you sentiment oval panel. I love the whitewash look to tone down the DSP – great tip, thanks

Great to see this technique used as it really is effective in toning down the dsp.

I love the way you’ve sponged around the edge with the white. Such a nice effect with this paper too.
